Our
staff and the animals in our care strongly rely on the generosity of our local
communities to help us take care of the thousands of unwanted, abandoned,
abused, sick and injured, lost and stray animals that pass through our doors
each year. There are many ways to help our shelter. If you have another
idea that isn't listed, please give us a call. Help is always appreciated! |
Volunteering at the Shelter:
The Kalamazoo Humane Society (269-345-1181) offers a training program for those
who wish to join the Humane Society at our shelter every Wednesday evening from
4-7.
Community Service:
For those who need to work community service hours for a class, special project,
probation or other reason, we can use your help Monday-Friday from 8am to
4:30pm. Please call and ask for the Kennel Staff to arrange a start date
and time.
S.O.S Group Volunteers:
S.O.S (Save our Strays) is a volunteer group that formed to help Animal
Services. They are always in need of help. They have a website at
http://www.saveourstrays.net/ for more information.
Monetary Donations:
Money donated to the shelter's general donation fund is used to treat all of the
sick and injured animals that come into our care. Soon, we will be
creating a 501(c)(3) to collect funds for a new shelter! This process has
begun, and more information will be posted on our website as soon as we have it
available. We do have a lot of people who donate in memory of a person or
pet, or as gifts for friends and family. In those instances we can create
a certificate to give, signed by our staff in recognition of the donation.
Pet Supplies Donations:
Our shelter staff cares for 100+ animals each and every
day. The shelter currently has 139 cages and more on the way to outfit our
new Cat's Only room. When all of these cages are full that's at least 139
mouths to feed, litter pans to clean and cages to clean. Our staff
strongly relies on donations from the public and local merchants to assist us in
maintaining a constant supply of pet care items. Things that we always use
are:
- Bleach (We use this constantly!)

- Hand soap
- Dish soap
- Dog, puppy, cat and kitten food (canned and
hard)
- Treats for pets
- Clean stuffed animals and toys than can be
bleach cleaned
- Blankets, towels, washcloths, or other
material to be used for bedding
- Pet beds (especially great for our pregnant
and nursing mommas!)
- Baby formula and bottles (for newborn
kittens and puppies)
- Hand Sanitizer
- Clean, unused carpet in squares
- Shampoo, nail trimmers, other grooming aides
We can also always use crates, leashes, collars
or any other pet items available to us. If we can't use it here, we do
give items to people who need assistance with their own pets. |
