Kennel
License inspections and sales are done in the month of May. If you did not have
a kennel license the previous year, than you must notify Kalamazoo County Animal
Services of your request for a Kennel License in April.
If you did not have a kennel license for
the previous year, you must first check with your local Township Office to make
sure that the Township will allow you to operate a kennel at your location, and
provide written permission for a kennel from your Township.
First time Kennel operators applying for a Kennel
License, must have all dogs on the property currently licensed by March 1st
. Any dogs on the property without a current license between March 1st
and the date of a Kennel License being issued will be considered delinquent and
may be subject to the delinquent fines. Once a Kennel License is issued, it
will be valid until the same time next year.
Any Kennel License applied for after June 1st
(for previous Kennel License owners only), will be considered delinquent and will be charged
double.

A Kennel as defined by the Michigan Department of
Agriculture Regulation No. 129 governing Dog Kennels is an establishment where
the owner keeps three (3) or more dogs and does so for sale, boarding, breeding,
or training. The law requires the following requirements to obtain a Kennel
License in the State of Michigan;

Any dog kennel
that is to be covered by a Michigan State Kennel License, must be constructed
in such a manner that any dog(s) housed there will be adequately and
comfortably kept in any season of the year.

The buildings,
including the walls and floors, must be of such construction that it can be
easily cleaned and sanitized. Any kennels or yards that are connected or are
used to confine the kennel dogs, must be kept clean and free from
accumulations of feces, filth, mud and debris.

Every dog kept
or maintained in the kennel or connected to the kennel, shall have constant
access to a clean, fresh, water supply. The dog(s) must also have an adequate
amount of proper food to maintain the dog(s) in a normal condition of health. -
The kennel
dogs must not be allowed to stray beyond the enclosed premises of the kennel,
and must be kept in such a way that prevents the public or stray animals from
obtaining entrance into or gaining contact with any dog(s) lodged at the
kennel.

Every dog in
the kennel must have a kennel tag (dog license) attached to their collar at
all times if they are four (4) months of age or older.
