What is the best way to prepare for a visit to my veterinarian?

When you visit the veterinarian, bring any records you have from previous visits (such as vaccine history). Bring a list of your dog's current food and medications. Many people will bring a bag with all of their animal's medication with them for the veterinarian to review. It is often necessary to bring a fecal sample if this is an annual visit, or a visit for weight loss or gastrointestinal problems (vomiting or diarrhea).

If you have multiple questions or concerns, it is often helpful to write them out. Writing out your questions will help you be more organized and you are less likely to forget something you really wanted to ask. Leave room on your question list to write answers. Present the list to your veterinarian early in the appointment so he can have time to answer them all to your satisfaction. You might also list medications that need to be refilled.

You may find it helpful to bring a companion if you anticipate a particularly stressful appointment, or you easily become overwhelmed at the information given during an appointment. An extra set of ears can help you remember and understand the information later and can take notes for you, if needed.

If there are long or detailed discharge instructions, ask the doctor to write it out.

Reiterate what you have learned and the directions you received and ask when the next visit should occur.
