Spousal support (often called alimony) and child support are not the same. Spousal support is for the support of the former spouse and child support is for the support of the child. For those who are unable to work for some reason, or who have not been employed for an extended period of time, spousal support may be ordered. Other circumstances may also justify spousal support. If ordered, spousal support might be for weekly or monthly payments for an indefinite period, for a limited time, or in one lump sum. It will be ordered paid through the FOC office, and the FOC will act as the receiving and disbursing agent. Spousal support arrearage is subject to most of the same enforcement actions as child support. Spousal support is subject to federal and state tax offset refund intercepts also.
