2007-2008 Surface Water Monitoring Annual Report
October 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008
A total of 896 sampling events were conducted at 96 surface water monitoring sites representative of Kalamazoo County surface water resources. Monitoring sites represent county drains, creeks, streams, and lakes located in sub-basins within the Kalamazoo River and St. Joseph River Watersheds. Sampling was also conducted in sub-basins that overlap in southern Barry County and northern St. Joseph County. Additionally, staff conducted 173 monitoring events at bathing beach facilities in Kalamazoo County, which resulted in the collection and analysis of 519 water samples.
2006-2007 Surface Water Monitoring Annual Report
October 1, 2006 to December 31, 2007
A total of 629 sampling events were conducted at 91 surface water monitoring sites representative of Kalamazoo County surface water resources. Monitoring sites represent county drains, creeks, streams, and lakes located in sub-basins within the Kalamazoo River and St. Joseph River Watersheds. Additionally, staff conducted 162 monitoring events at bathing beach facilities in Kalamazoo County, which resulted in the collection and analysis of 486 water samples.
Bathing Beach Monitoring & Predictive Modeling Project Report
June 1, 2005 to December 31, 2006
The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services and Kieser & Associates (a local environmental consultant) received funding to develop predictive monitoring tools for bathing beach water quality at four (4) bathing beach facilities in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality awarded $49,000 under the Clean Michigan Initiative Clean Water Fund to develop a 2006 monitoring plan, collect water quality data, perform statistical analyses, and develop predictive monitoring tools.
2005-2006 Surface Water Monitoring Annual Report
October 1, 2005 to September 30, 2006
A total of 589 sampling events were conducted at 120 surface water monitoring sites representative of Kalamazoo County surface water resources. Monitoring sites represent county drains, creeks, streams, and lakes located in sub-basins within the Kalamazoo River and St. Joseph River Watersheds. Additionally, staff conducted 348 monitoring events at bathing beach facilities in Kalamazoo County, which resulted in the collection and analysis of 1,044 water samples.

October 1, 2004 to September 30, 2005
A total of 732 sampling events were conducted at 111 surface water monitoring sites representative of Kalamazoo County surface water resources. Monitoring sites represent county drains, creeks, streams, and lakes located in sub-basins within the Kalamazoo River and St. Joseph River Watersheds. Additionally, staff conducted 171 monitoring events at bathing beach facilities in Kalamazoo County, which resulted in the collection and analysis of 513 water samples.
2004 Surface Water Monitoring Program Annual Report
October 1, 2003 to September 30, 2004
A total of 958 sampling events were conducted at 117 surface water monitoring sites representative of Kalamazoo County surface water resources. Monitoring sites represent county drains, creeks, streams, and lakes located in sub-basins within the Kalamazoo River and St. Joseph River Watersheds. Additionally, staff conducted 179 monitoring events at bathing beach facilities in Kalamazoo County, which resulted in the collection and analysis of 537 water samples.
Identifying Failing On-Site Septic Systems Project Report
January 1, 2002 to April 30, 2003
The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services and Pavilion Township received funding to assess and evaluate onsite sewage disposal systems along Portage River, Dorrance Creek, and an unnamed tributary of the Portage River. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality awarded $18,000 under the Clean Michigan Initiative Clean Water Fund to determine if surface water was impacted by onsite sewage disposal systems.
Kalamazoo River Watershed Stream Monitoring Project Report
September 1, 2001 to September 30, 2003
The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services received funding to assess and evaluate the condition of tributaries to the Kalamazoo River in Kalamazoo County. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality awarded $29,000 under the Clean Michigan Initiative Clean Water Fund to monitor 33 sites, which represent 13 streams, all of which discharge to the Kalamazoo River.
Bathing Beach Monitoring Project Report
June 1, 2001 to September 30, 2002
The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services, Allegan County Health Department, and Van Buren/Cass County District Health Department received funding to monitor bathing beaches. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality awarded $35,000 under the Clean Michigan Initiative Clean Water Fund to conduct monitoring at 21 Lake Michigan and inland beaches.
2001 Surface Water Monitoring Program Annual Report
April 1, 2001 to September 30, 2001
The Kalamazoo County Surface Water Monitoring Program was implemented in part by many citizen concerns over surface water quality issues in southern Kalamazoo County. The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners, at their June 20, 2000, meeting, directed county staff to develop and implement a program. The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services hired a staff person to develop, implement, and administer a countywide surface water monitoring program. This report summarizes the data that were collected during the first year of the program.
