The Maternal & Child Health Division programs provide services to strengthen the capacity of individuals and families at risk in Kalamazoo County to take control of their lives and work toward self-sufficiency.

Semiannual symposium, “Perspectives in Public Health,” addressed Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention concerns. The panel of guest speakers included Dr. Kanta Bhambdani of Detroit’s Children’s Hospital. Her presentation centered on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical disease and treatment of elevated lead levels of children in the State of Michigan. Although, the number of elevated blood levels is declining state-wide, there continues to be specific regions that continue to harbor hazardous agents and endanger the development and welfare of our children.

The discussion also included specific Kalamazoo County efforts associated with lead surveillance, case detection and environmental efforts. The collaborative efforts within County programs has increased the number of lead testing completed to over 550 children.
