Yellow Fever Infected Areas
These are areas where the virus is present in monkeys and is a potential risk to humans as defined by the World Health Organization. Some of these countries demand a yellow fever certificate from travelers as a condition of entry to their country. Many of these, and other countries, will ask you for a certificate if you are entering from an infected country.
Your travel agent should inform you if you need a certificate when you are booking your holiday or flight. You can double check if in doubt with your local yellow fever vaccination centre (details from your local Health Board).
This map shows in red the approximate distribution of the 'infected zones'.
Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda.
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.
Please note: from 2002, WHO has directly confirmed with us that they have removed Zambia from their formal list of yellow fever infected countries. However they recognize that not all immigration authorities may have realized this and some may disagree. Therefore travelers leaving Zambia for any country that asks for certificates from those arriving from an infected country should ensure (e.g. with the embassy of the country concerned) they are satisfied that their destination country is following the WHO guidelines before they decide to travel there without a certificate.
Some countries do not exactly follow these World Health Organization guidelines
- Bangladesh considers Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Malawi and Zambia as infected.
- Egypt considers Belize, Costa Rica and Zambia to be infected.
- Guyana considers Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras to be infected.
- Guinea-Bissau considers Djibouti, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zambia as infected.
- India considers Zambia as infected.
- Singapore considers Argentina, Paraguay, Cape Verde and Madagascar as infected.
