Disposal Options for Materials Not Accepted at Curbside Recycling

How can I dispose of refrigerators, large propane tanks, tires and other less common recyclables?

Refrigerators, Air Conditioners, Dehumidifiers, and Other Freon-bearing appliances
For a fee, Charlie's Appliance Removal (375-0899) and Ted's Appliance (382-1540) will pickup and recycle the Freon and metal. For City of Kalamazoo residents, Freon-bearing appliances (with doors removed from refrigerators and freezers) may be set out for the monthly bulk trash pickup service (337-8215).

Propane Grill Tanks
Amerigas (1600 King Highway, 343-5253) will accept most larger grill tanks for a modest fee. Household Hazardous Waste Center accepts one pound propane cylinders from households.

Tires, automotive (fee)
For a modest charge, limited quantities (typically four) are accepted by Belle Tire, Discount Tire, Firestone, Goodyear, Kzoo Tire Co., Mike's Tire Service and Twin City Tire (Plainwell).

Ammunition
Please contact your local police department for disposal options.

Asbestos (fee)
Westside Landfill in Three Rivers (269-279-5444) will accept any asbestos material such as pipe wrap and tiles. Call ahead for details.

Batteries Car
Auto batteries are accepted at Firestone, HHW Center and Ideal Battery.

Batteries - Household
All household batteries including alkaline, button-cell, lithium and rechargeable batteries may be brought to the HHW Center for recycling. Rechargeable batteries which are commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, and toys are also accepted at most Radio Shacks, Target, Sears, Best Buy and many other retailers (for a full list, call 1-800-8-BATTERY or visit http://www.rbrc.org/).

Cell Phones
Accepted at the HHW Center, Alltel, and Best Buy.

Concrete (fee)
Drop-off at Consumers Concrete.

Household Hazardous Waste
Drop-off oil-based paint, pesticides, pure motor oil & filters, gasoline, and anti-freeze at the HHW Center, 373-5211. Free to most Kalamazoo County households (City of Galesburg residents please call for service fees).

Inkjet Printer Cartridges
Drop-off at Goodwill retail stores and the HHW Center.

Metals/Scrap Metals
Free drop-offs at:
  • OmniSource Corporation, 2730 Millcork, 381-7277 (will pay customers for scrap metal)
  • Schupan & Sons, 2225 Glendenning, 382-0000
  • Kalamazoo Metal Recyclers, a 24-hour drop box at 1525 King Highway, 381-1315.

Charlie Appliance Removal (375-0899) and Ted's Appliances (382-1540) recycle refrigerators, freezers, & other Freon-bearing appliances for a fee.

Microwaves
If the microwave is made of mostly metal casing, take it to Schupan and Sons, 2225 Glendenning, or Ace Iron & Metal, 1403 4th Street, for recycling. If the casing is mostly plastic, the microwave can be safely disposed of in regular trash.

Oil - Home Heating
The HHW Center accepts home heating oil in containers up to 5-gallon size. For a fee, Sperry Brothers (329-4600), EM Sergeant Co. (343-1363) and Stoddard and Sons (877-740-1151) will pickup home heating oil.

Oil - Pure Used Motor
Do not mix with antifreeze or gasoline, which contaminates the oil making it non-recyclable. (The HHW Center accepts both pure used motor oil and oil mixed with antifreeze or gasoline.) Free drop-offs for small quantities (typically up to 4 gallons at a time) of pure, used oil are accepted as a community service by Advance Auto Parts, Autozone, the Comstock Township drop-off center, Parchment Service Center, PepBoys, Person's Auto Repair, Tractor Supply Co, Uncle Ed's Oil Shoppe and Wal-Mart stores in addition to the Household Hazardous Waste Center. For bulk quantities, contact Stoddard and Sons Oil Company (269-792-6591) and Crystal Flash (800-280-6227) for fee services. Farm operations can contact the Household Hazardous Waste Center (373-5211) for other possible options.

Packing Foam Peanuts
UPS Store, Mailing and More (Richland), Mail Room and Pak Mail accept loosefill packing peanuts for reuse.

Plastic Retail Bags marked with a #2 or #4
Bags that are clean and free of trash can be taken to Wal-Mart stores and placed in proper receptacles in the lobby area.

Smoke Detectors
Dispose in regular trash. No other options available at this time.

Trash (fee)
For a fee, transfer stations accept trash items for landfill disposal at BFI at 3432 Gembrit Circle (381-2226), Miller Road Transfer Station at 2606 Miller Road (388-3346), and Reliable Disposal at 2800 Cork Street (381-9571).

Yard Trimmings (fee)

  1. Most cities and villages offer seasonal pickups for brush and fall leaves.
  2. Your waste hauling company provides weekly pickup service (generally from April through November) for a fee.
  3. Private drop-off sites -- Kalamazoo Landscape Supplies at 5111 S. 9th Street (375-8000), Miller Road Transfer Station at 2606 Miller Road (388-3346), and Mulder's Landscape Supplies at 3333 Ravine Road (345-6900) -- accept grass clippings, leaves, and brush for composting for a fee. Mulders charges a reduced fee for leaves only.
