Recycling

Recycling at Work

Paper is generally the most common "waste" material generated by a business. That's why 60 percent of businesses in Kalamazoo County already recycle boxes and office papers. Fortunately, paper recycling is easy and can cut your waste disposal costs thanks to the availability of free drop-off recycling sites for paper and pickup services for a fee. Be aware that spending a nickel on paper recycling services can save a quarter by having costly trash dumpsters downsized or emptied less frequently.
Which Papers are Recyclable?
  • Mail
  • Faxes
  • Flattened boxes
  • NCR carbonless forms
  • Copier & computer papers
  • Post-it notes & file folders
  • Paper bags & telephone books
  • Envelopes without plastic windows
  • Newspapers, magazines, & catalogs

Staples are OK, but do not include rubber bands, paper clips, facial tissue, food packaging, carbon paper, wraps from paper reams which contain a thin coat of plastic to deter moisture, or any item which is not paper.

Getting Started with Paper Recycling

Give each work station a collection basket or box. Place larger containers near copiers, printers, and fax machines. Use a staff meeting and posters to show everyone how to participate. Offset any cost by ordering a smaller, less expensive trash dumpster or less frequent trash pickup.
