Investigate citizen reports and complaints of animal related problems or concerns. Assist local law enforcement agencies with animal related calls. Capture, rescue, load, transport, and impound stray animals. Sell dog licenses and issue citations for failing to purchase licenses. Locate, quarantine and release bit animals, obtain victim statements and complete department quarantine forms. Pick up injured animals, trapped wildlife and dead domestic animals. Euthanize animals as necessary or as required by departmental policy. Decapitate dead bite animals and send the specimens to the State Lab for rabies testing.
High School diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to produce clear, legible, and grammatically correct reports. Valid Michigan driver's license and good driving record. Computer literate. Must have one of the following: a) Two years experience as a kennel technician or veterinarian’s assistant; or b) Two years progressively responsible experience working with people and animals; or c)Two years college-level education; or d) One year working as a Certified Animal Control Officer (ACO). ACO certifiable within one year of hire. Certified in chemical capture and euthanasia in State of Michigan a plus. Effective verbal communication skills with the ability to deal with a variety of people in tense situations. Ability to work independently. Map reading skills and ability to travel extensively throughout Kalamazoo County. Ability to work shift work, weekends, and holidays. Must pass a physical and background check.
