Juror Qualification Questionnaire

Jury questionnaires are issued by random selection from Michigan driver's licenses and state identification lists. Jury questionnaires must be fully completed and returned to the court within 10 days of the postmark on the questionnaire. Failure to complete and return a jury questionnaire, providing false information on the questionnaire, or using vulgar or profane language in response to a jury questionnaire subjects a citizen to show cause proceedings for contempt of court. Disqualification from jury service is not granted based on occupation, religious or personal circumstances at this questionnaire level.

Length of Jury Service

Jury service is one day or one trial, whichever is longer. Judges will advise prospective jurors of the anticipated length of the trial when they are called into the courtroom.

Postponement of Jury Service

Summoned jurors that have a conflict with their assigned date should contact the jury coordinator no later than 7 days prior to the scheduled service date. The court typically does not allow more than one postponement.

Excusal from Jury Service

Requests for excusal must be received in writing or by fax at the Jury Services Office at least 7 days prior to your service date. You may be eligible to be excused for this service period if any of the conditions are met below:

1. You are not a United States citizen.
   (verification of your alien status must be provided)

2. You do not permanently reside in Kalamazoo County.
   (a copy of your new/changed driver's license/state identification card or other acceptable change of address documentation must be provided)

3. You do not understand and speak English.
   (subject to verification)

4. You are physically and/or mentally unable to carry out the functions of a juror.
   (a doctor's statement or note excusing you from jury duty must be provided)

5. You are 70 years of age or older and do not want to serve.
   (subject to verification)

6. You have served as a juror in the past 12 months.
   (subject to verification)

7. You have been convicted of a felony.
   (subject to verification)

If you meet any of the above conditions, please mail or fax your verification to our Jury Services Office.

Failure to Report for Jury Service

If a juror fails to appear for the assigned service date and fails to call to reschedule within 14 days, show cause proceedings for contempt of court will be initiated. Failure to report to a show cause hearing will result in a bench warrant for arrest. Jurors may be fined and/or jailed if found in contempt of court.
