The Breastfeeding Initiative is an USDA-funded program that is a collaborative
partnership between the Michigan Department of Community Health and MSU Extension.
Trained Peer Counselors provide WIC Eligible women with breastfeeding knowledge,
encouragement and support. The peer counselors are available to visit new mothers in
the hospital, at the WIC clinic or in their own home. There is no fee for eligible clients.
Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are only a phone call away to offer critical assistance.
Studies show that when limited income families have this kind of support, a greater
percentage begins breastfeeding and breastfeed longer.
For more information you may contact the BFI Peer Counselor at huleta@msu.edu or by calling (269) 384-8064.
