COST SHARE PROGRAM
This program has been in existence since 1995, assisting landowners in protecting groundwater.
Some of the practices landowners have utilized to protect groundwater include: closing
abandoned wells, conducting Farmstead Assessments, participating in cost-share
programs such as pesticide storage facilities, bulk fertilizer containments, nurse tanks and
more. In 2002 the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program (MGSP) has $17,850 in
cost-share monies to assist growers in Kalamazoo and St. Joseph counties to make on-
farm changes to protect groundwater. For example, cost-share covers well closures
100%, manure management 50%. For a more detailed list of what cost-share can help
you with, contact Linda Zabik (269) 327-1258 EXT 4

To better utilize funds, the MGSP is teaming up with the Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) program, EQIP. EQIP is a voluntary, federally-funded program
available to farmers in the St. Joseph River Basin which encompasses St. Joseph,
Kalamazoo, Branch, Cass, Berrien, Calhoun and Van Buren counties. To qualify for
program funds, a conservation plan must be completed addressing all areas of concern on
the farm. The plan must be developed by the NRCS District employee or other approved
representative. Plans will be reviewed for funding based on a point system. Points are
earned from existing and proposed practices listed in the plan.
Those interested in a pesticide storage facility and/or bulk fertilizer containment must
apply for both MGSP and EQIP funds. This will potentially increase the amount of cost-share.
If you would like more detailed cost-share information or are interested in participating in
the program, please contact Linda Zabik (269) 327-1258 EXT 4
