Free Water Quality Assessment

Kalamazoo, Mich.- Do you know where your water comes from? What would you do if your water source became unhealthy for you to use? Do you know what you can do to protect your water source?

A staggering 43% of Michigan's residents depend on groundwater for drinking. In this area, everyone depends on groundwater. Groundwater is water below the surface of the earth. We use wells to pull the water from the earth and send it to service our homes. Although this water is often far underground, things we do above ground can have an impact on groundwater. The Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program exists to help every Michigan resident to learn to protect the water resources we share.

There are simple things you can do to minimize your groundwater risks at your home. Call Melanie Szewczyk at the Kalamazoo MSU Extension Office at (269) 383-6429 and ask for a free water quality assessment. Whether you live in Kalamazoo, Cass, or St. Joseph county, Melanie will visit you and teach you how to protect and improve water quality around your home. This assessment is confidential, and you get to keep the workbook used at your home.

Take the next step to protect your health and the health of your family. Call Melanie Szewczyk at (269) 383-6429 or email her at szewczy5@msu.edu today!

The Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program is designed to help residents and farmers identify ways to reduce the risk of groundwater contamination associated with the application of pesticides and nitrogen fertilizers. Programs are both voluntary and confidential and aim to maintain a focus on the financial and technical constraints that drive everyday decisions. MGSP is a cooperative effort between Michigan Department of Agriculture, Michigan State University Extension, USAD Natural Resources Conservation Service and Michigan's AmeriCorps. Close coordination is also maintained with Michigan Farm Bureau, Michigan Agri-Business Association and the Michigan Association of Conservation Districts.
