TRAINING PROGRAMS COMING SOON ON NEW ZONING ENABLING ACT AND NEW ZONING GUIDEBOOK

Kalamazoo, Mich.- Recently the Legislature repealed the three existing zoning enabling acts and replaced them with a single new zoning enabling act that applies to all cities, villages, townships and counties. The new act becomes effective on July 1, 2006. Some of the major changes include:

* Reorganization of all elements and the addition of new definitions
* New public hearing notice requirements for all zoning activities
* Phasing out zoning boards (not zoning boards of appeals)
* Changes to use variance authority, standards and procedures
* Elimination of state review of county zoning ordinances and amendments.
A series of 15 training programs are scheduled to begin May 8 and finish June 13 to explain the new act, its implications and to present the new Michigan Zoning Guidebook. The guidebook was written by Mark Wyckoff, FAICP, director of the new Planning & Zoning Center at MSU. Wyckoff will also conduct the training programs. Cosponsors of the training programs include:
* MSU Extension
* MSU Land Policy Institute
