Interested in Growing your own Food?
Kalamazoo, Mich.- Would you like to grow your own fresh food? MSU Extension is offering a series of vegetable gardening classes beginning March 23, 2009. Classes will meet each Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm through April 27 in the Georgian Room of the Kalamazoo County office building located at 3299 Gull Road (Nazareth complex). Cost for the series of classes is $40 per person. Registration is currently underway!
Vegetable Gardening 101 is designed for people who would like to begin growing their own vegetables or for those gardeners who would like to improve their gardening skills. People with 3 or less years of experience will benefit most from this course. Class topics include: what is required to grow a satisfactory vegetable garden, the best plants to grow and how to grow them, how to start plants from seed, how to build raised gardens, container gardening, organic gardening, how to control pests and weeds, how to compost and many tricks and tips for successful gardening.
New this year will be an optional question and answer session from 9:00 to 9:30 p.m. each week. In addition, students will have the opportunity for hands on experience in a community vegetable garden working alongside Master Gardeners once they have completed the classes.
These classes will be taught by Advanced Master Gardeners with extensive vegetable gardening experience. A curriculum and handouts will be provided for each student enrolled in this series of classes, and these materials are included in the registration fee for the class.
