MSU Forestry Entomologist to Discuss Gypsy Moths in November 3rd Meeting at Glen Oaks

Gypsy moths have been a significant problem in Michigan at various times since the 1950’s. But for many areas in the southwest corner of Michigan, this is our first experience in dealing with high numbers of the pest. The summer of 2008 brought significant infestation of gypsy moths in several pockets within St. Joseph County. But MSU Forestry Entomologist Dr. Deb McCullough warns that the problem has the potential to be a lot worse than the level of damage we saw last summer. Gypsy moths can totally de-foliate trees in a matter of days when they are found in high numbers. Many residents that saw the pest in pockets last year reported that the falling frass from the feeding caterpillars sounded like rainfall last spring.

What you can do to reduce the effects of this pest on your trees (and keep your sanity) during a gypsy moth outbreak year will be one of the featured topics at a St. Joseph County MSU Extension sponsored Tree Insect and Disease Pest Meeting. The program will be held at the Glen Oaks Community College Business Development Center on Monday, November 3rd. from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Dr. Deb McCullough and Dr. Dennis Fulbright, MSU Forestry Pathologist will discuss current and emerging insect and disease issues that can affect ornamental and woodlot tree species in southwest Michigan. Topics that will be covered will include Gypsy Moth, Emerald Ash Borers, and new insects that may cause problems just around the corner, and diseases affecting spruces and firs, white and Austrian pines, oaks, maples and other ornamental species. They also will discuss what may be better options at this point for ornamental plantings for landscape trees from a pest tolerance standpoint. Registration is $5.00 per person. We ask that you register for this program by calling (269)-467-5511 so that we can plan on materials and seating for this program.
