MSU Forestry Entomologist to Discuss Gypsy Moths in November 3rd Meeting at Glen Oaks Gypsy moths have been a significant problem in Michigan at various times since the 1950’s. But for many areas in the southwest corner of Michigan, this is our first experience in dealing with high numbers of the pest. The summer of 2008 brought significant infestation of gypsy moths in several pockets within St. Joseph County. But MSU Forestry Entomologist Dr. Deb McCullough warns that the problem has the potential to be a lot worse than the level of damage we saw last summer. Gypsy moths can totally de-foliate trees in a matter of days when they are found in high numbers. Many residents that saw the pest in pockets last year reported that the falling frass from the feeding caterpillars sounded like rainfall last spring.
