Home Food Preservation – Canning Seminar

Kalamazoo, Mich.- MSU Extension-Kalamazoo County is offering a Canning Seminar on Thursday, July 30th at the Sister’s of St. Joseph Transformations Center, 3427 Gull Rd., 5:30-7:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required; there is a $35 fee per person. Registration forms can be obtained at the MSU Extension office by calling (269) 384-8197 or visit www.msue.msu.edu/kalamazoo Registration deadline is July 24. This session will be taught by Diana Fair, Extension Educator.

Gardens will soon be overflowing with shiny red tomatoes and bright green peppers; orchards will be filled with sweet juicy peaches and farmers’ markets will be piled high with fresh produce. It’s all so easy to preserve! Up-to-date food preservation procedures are essential to ensure safe canned, frozen and dehydrated foods.

It appears as if home food preservation is having a comeback for a variety of reasons. Some people like to preserve food because they know how the food was grown on their own property. With the economy as it is, those who haven’t canned in a few years are once again considering it, especially if they already have the canning equipment. And some just like to have the satisfaction of canning, freezing or dehydrating foods for their family and for gifts.

For more information on food and nutrition, please contact Leatta Byrd at the Kalamazoo County MSU Extension Office at 269-384-8063.
