Workshop: Partnering with Schools for your Child’s Success

Kalamazoo, Mich.- The Kinship Care Program (Relatives Raising Relative Children) at Michigan State University Extension is taking registrations for a workshop on “Partnering with the Schools for Your Child’s Success” scheduled for Wednesday, October 21 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The program is free of charge for kinship families and will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Portage.

The workshop will provide families with tips on communicating with the schools to ensure that your children receive the best education and services available to them. For many kinship families such as grandparents raising grandchildren, the schools have changed significantly in the last ten years. This session will provide families with the tools to get the most out of school conferences, the importance of maintaining positive communication between teachers and families, and when and how does your child qualify for specialized programs such as IEP (Individualized Education Program).

Workshop facilitators are: Kathy Howard, Advocacy Services for Kids and Rikki Saunders, Kalamazoo Public Schools. Materials at the workshop include:

The Essential Parenting Guide to Navigating Middle School & Beyond by Julie Mack and Rosemary Parker and - School Care notebook pages to help you keep your child’s school records organized.

The workshop is free with child care provided. To register call 383-8861 or for more information call Joyce Stout, 384-8054.
