MSU Alumni Annual Outing Supports Local Moms

Kalamazoo, Mich.- The Kalamazoo Chapter of the MSU Alumni Club will host the 37th Annual Spartans & Friends Family Picnic on Wednesday, August 19th, 5-9 p.m. a the Kellogg Biological Station on Gull Lake. This year’s honorary guest will be Dwayne Stephens, MSU Men’s Assistant Basketball Coach. There is an admission fee of $30 for adults, $15 for children 6-18, children under 6 are free. Food, beverages and many fun activities are scheduled for this event.

Each year the MSU Alumni Club of Kalamazoo donates some of the proceeds of their annual events to the Kalamazoo County MSU Extension Breastfeeding Initiative Program. These monies are used to purchase hospital grade breast pumps for breastfeeding moms in Kalamazoo County. The pumps are available on loan through MSU Extension.

New mothers are able to participate in this program by signing up with the MSU Extension Mother-to-Mother program where a breastfeeding peer counselor is available to help the mother with breastfeeding coaching and concerns until her infant reaches one year of age. The goal of the lending library is to help a mother continue breastfeeding for as long as possible. It enables moms to return to work and pump to keep up her milk supply. In addition to borrowing breast pumps, the breastfeeding peer counselor can also help moms with supplies and general information to help the mom continue to meet her breastfeeding goals.

The MSU Alumni Club of Kalamazoo is helping make Kalamazoo a healthier, happier place for our moms and our babies.
