Kalamazoo County Office of Community Corrections
JAIL SCREENING
An important part of the Community Corrections comprehensive plan, is to
monitor the jail population. The Kalamazoo County Jail books approximately 12,000 inmates per
year.
Community Corrections staff screen post arraignment, inmates who continue to be incarcerated
72 hours after booking. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of non-violent inmates
housed at the Kalamazoo County Jail and ultimately, make more jail beds available for sentenced
defendants, without adversely affective public safety.
OCC staff utilize the following factors in determining bond reduction recommendations:
- Criminal history
- Family ties in the community
- Residence
- Employment
- Mental health
- Substance Abuse
- Current Probation Status
- Current charges
- History of Failure to Appear
Based upon the results of the screening, OCC staff may recommend the bond remain the same or
recommend a reduction in bond with placement in alternative programs such as Electronic
Monitoring and Substance Abuse treatment.
