Kalamazoo County Office of Community Corrections
PROBATION RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM
Community Corrections receives funding from the State Office of Community Corrections for Probation Residential Services (PRS). Adult defendants convicted of a felony and who meet specific eligibility criteria, may be sentenced to a PRS center. The defendant receives intervention to address the psychosocial reasons for criminal behavior. At the PRS facility, the defendant will receive treatment for substance abuse issues, anger management, and employability skills training. Participants also perform community service while residing at the PRS center. A goal of the PRS is to provide Circuit Court probationers with the skills and opportunities necessary to become productive and law abiding members of the community. Probationers who are in violation of the terms of their probation can be sent to the PRS center as a sanction for their non-compliance.
OCC contracts with the Kalamazoo Probation Enhancement Program (K-PEP) for probation residential services. K-PEP has separate PRS facilities for men and women. OCC received 1.2 million dollars in 2005 to house up to 78 men and women per month in the PRS program. On average, defendants are sentenced to a six-month stay at the PRS facility. The actual length of stay at the PRS is determined by the Judge, using the current charge, criminal history and recommendation from the probation agent, as guiding factors. The PRS program provides an alternative to jail and prison for many defendants.
Defendants sent to a prison boot camp are often placed in a PRS facility upon their release from boot camp. This placement re-enforces skills learned at the boot camp and assists in the defendant's transition back to the community.
Target Population & Eligibility Criteria:
Felony offenders whose Sentencing Guide Line (SGL) score is 0-9 months or higher, or probation violators whose original SGL score is 0-6 months or higher.
