Department of Planning & Community Development
Schoolcraft Area US-131 Planning Committee
Notes from 19 May 2004 Meeting with St. Joseph County US-131 Corridor Master Plan Committee at the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce
The meeting came to order at 7:00 p.m. The list of attendees is attached. Those in attendance were invited to go around the room and introduce themselves.
Ms. Carpenter led a quick update regarding several matters, including House Bill 5528, a letter from MDOT Southwest Region Planner Jason Latham, and a letter being drafted to MDOT Director Gloria Jeff. When this was completed, Mr. Sych and Ms. Carpenter each took a few minutes to discuss the histories of the respective committees for which they serve as facilitators.
When these updates were completed, those in attendance discussed the areas of similarity and potential cooperation, which exist between the two groups. After that discussion, Ms. Carpenter detailed a list of activities which those in attendance suggested we address:
- Draft a resolution which would demonstrate unity of purpose between the two committees.
- Solicit involvement from various Grand Rapids groups, including the chamber of commerce, the city government, the Grand Valley Metro Council, and Right Place.
- Solicit involvement from MDOT.
- Involve the US-131 Area Development Association (ADA).
- Work to implement access management.
We further discussed the means by which we would go about achieving these goals. A subcommittee, comprising Ms. Carpenter, Mr. Harden, Mr. Lowry, and Mr. Sych was charged with drafting the resolution for which the groups called in item 1 (meeting scheduled for 26 May 2004). Once that resolution has been completed, approved, and then distributed to and adopted by local units, we will then seek to implement items 2 and 3. MDOT will be advised of the activities at the open house to be held in Three Rivers on 26 May 2004. Item 4 will be implemented at US-131 ADA meetings to be held in Schoolcraft (9 June) and Kalamazoo (August), as well as through the ongoing efforts of Mr. Beavers (Village of Constantine) and Mr. Warfield, both of whom serve as directors with the US-131 ADA.
The next meeting of the joint SAUPC and US-131 ADA will be held Wednesday, 16 June 2004, at 7:00 p.m., at the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:08 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Darrell Harden, SAUPC Secretary
