Kalamazoo County Jail Rules

The following is a set of general rules governing property that will be accepted at the front desk for residents of this facility, as well as other information.


Items That Will Be Accepted

Inmates may purchase items through the commissary.

One set of clothing may be left for an upcoming court appearance - only for jury trials.

New plastic hairbrushes with no handles.

Games: Uno, Monopoly, Scrabble, Checkers, Chess, Yahtzee, Dominos, and puzzles are the only accepted items. All games must be new, in the wrapper and containing plastic playing pieces. All games will be donated to the jail and will not be returned. There are no exceptions.

Medications: Prescription medications authorized by jail nurse.

Personal Hygiene Items: Can be purchased through the inmate commissary

Correspondence: No mail will be accepted across the front desk. All other correspondence must be mailed through the US Postal Service, UPS, or other agency.


Property Pick-Up Hours

Property must be picked up within thirty days of the final release of a resident or it will be disposed of. It is the inmates responsibility to advise someone prior to leaving jail.

Property may be picked up Monday through Friday, between 09:00am and 10:30am and 1:00pm and 03:30pm.


Packages

Mailed packages will only be accepted for inmates when previously approved by the midnight sergeant. Inmates must seek approval and should contact the midnight sergeant by kite. All other packages will be returned. Approved packages must have proper return address and inmates names and A#. Items inside must be listed on the outside of the package and meet guidelines for acceptable property or it will be returned to the sender. All incoming packages will be opened and inspected.


Reading Materials

Newspapers, magazines or 'paperback' books are accepted only if mailed direct from the publisher or from the 'approved bookstore' list.

Reading material that 'will not be accepted' includes specific information regarding manufacture of weapons, explosives, incendiary devices, poisons, or dangerous drugs. Material advocating violence, insurrections, or that can be construed as anarchical in nature. Publications describing or showing acts of homosexuality, sadism, violent sexual practices, and/or unlawful sexual behavior.


Photographs

Pictures are to be no larger than 5" x 7" and must be in an envelope clearly marked with the resident's name and A#. They will not be accepted across the front desk; they must be mailed.

We will not accept any type of picture frame or Polaroid pictures.


Money

All money must be deposited in the resident's account no later than 4:00pm on Wednesday in order for it to be deposited in time to be used for store orders on Friday.

We accept cash, money orders, and cashiers checks. No personal checks are accepted.

Inmate account checks will be handled only in accordance with the memo posted in the lobby.


Visiting Hours

Monday through Friday

Mornings: 9:00am, 9:30am, 10:00am
Afternoons: 1:00pm, 1:30pm, 2:00pm, 2:30pm, 3:00pm


Sign up times: You can begin signing in for visits anytime after 7:00a.m. on the same day of the requested visit. You must sign in at least 15 minutes prior to the visit time you are requesting; however, the visits are first come first serve.

There will be NO telephone reservations accepted. You MUST sign up in person. A VALID GOVERNMENT PICTURE ID WITH CORRECT ADDRESS IS REQUIRED TO SIGN UP AND VISIT.

If you are on parole or probation, you will not be allowed to visit. If you were just released from our facility, you will have to wait 30 days before you can visit.

During recreation and/or school testing period, residents will not be allowed to visit. Their visitors will be notified and asked to reschedule their visiting time.

Inmates are allowed two (2) 30-minute visits per week; Trustees are allowed three (3) 30-minute visits per week. Multiple visitors at the same time will receive only a thirty-minute visit and the multiple visits will count toward the total number of visits.

Proper conduct must be maintained while in the jail facility at all times or your privilege to visit may be cancelled.

If you have signed up for a visit and decide you do not want to visit, it is your responsibility to advise the personnel at the front desk, at least 15 minutes before the scheduled visit, so that your visit can be cancelled without penalty. You must cancel a scheduled visit in person. If you do not appear for your visit after you sign up, it will be counted.

NO children under the age of 12 are allowed in the visiting room. ALL children must be attended by a responsible person while in the lobby area. Children between the ages of 12-16 must show proof of age (Birth Certificate) and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during the visit. If a legal guardian brings a minor in, you must bring a copy of the court papers of the guardianship.

No food or drink is permitted in the lobby or in the visiting area. Cell phone use is prohibited in the lobby and visiting area.
