Recently department stores in the Oshtemo Twp area have been targeted by groups of individuals who will select several shopping carts full of electronics and other high priced items. Once the carts are full, the subjects will exit the stores and flee to awaiting vehicles.
On June 22 2012, WalMart security noticed members of a known group of subjects enter the store and begin placing items in carts. Following a call to KCSO dispatch, deputies responded to the scene and kept in contact with store security officers.
Once the suspects exited the store with the unpaid for items, deputies confronted the suspects and took 5 subjects into custody. All the items were recovered. Over $1000 worth of merchandise had been taken from the store by these subjects on this occasion.
When confronted by security, one subject assaulted the security officer. Two adults and three juveniles were arrested and lodged for the crimes. Charges range from Unarmed robbery to Felony Retail Fraud. Other charges are pending.
A vehicle was seized and deputies plan to forfeit the vehicle as a part of a criminal enterprise.
Deputies with KCSO were assisted by WMU DPS and Kalamazoo Twp PD.
