07/08/2012 - Boating Accident on Austin Lake Causes Amputation
On Sunday, July 8 2012, Kirshaiah Brodie-Stevenson, a 23 year old Kalamazoo resident, was injured in a boating accident on Austin Lake.
The woman was tubing behind a boat. The boat had come to a stop to pick up subjects out of the water. The boat operator started backing up and did not see the woman behind the boat. She was pulled into the propellor and under the water.
The other tubers were able to pull her out of the water and into the boat. Her leg was amputated near the knee by the boat's propeller. They then called 911 to summon aid. They proceeded to a dock in the 3000 blk of Woodhams where they were met by members of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department Marine Patrol and Portage Fire/Rescue.
The woman was immediately transported to Bronson Hospital by LifeEMS. She is in serious condition.
