|07/08/2012 - Two Killed, Two Injured in Crash Caused by Cell Phone Distraction
On Sunday July 8th 2012 at 9:50am the Kalamazoo County Sheriffs Office investigated a single vehicle fatal traffic crash.
The initial investigation determined 55 year old Sandra Jaco was driving a 2002 Ford Focus southbound on Sprinkle Rd. As she drove through the East Main Street intersection she reached for her cell phone, causing the vehicle to drift onto the west shoulder. Upon re-entering the roadway, she lost control, crossing the centerline and striking a group of trees on the east shoulder before coming to rest on its roof.
Her 23 year daugher, Rachel Jaco, was partialy ejected from the vehicle. Corey Swadling, her 36 year old son, was also ejected. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene. Neither were wearing seatbelts.
Brendyn Jaco her 3 year old grandson was properly restrained in the back seat. Sandra Jaco is listed in fair condition at Borgess Hopital. Brendyn Jaco is listed in critical condition at Bronson Hospital.
There are no indications that alcohol is a factor in this crash, which remains under investigation.
