Alcohol and Tobacco compliance investigation completed
Age compliance checks for area businesses for selling alcohol and tobacco to underage persons were conducted throughout Kalamazoo County over the last two weeks by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office. The compliance checks resulted in 8 total citations issued to individuals accused of selling to minors. The compliance checks were conducted by KCSO Detective Sergeants working in plainclothes with underage youths who attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages at 50 businesses resulting in 5 citations issued (10% failure rate) and tobacco products at 25 businesses resulting in 3 citations issued (12% failure rate). The compliance checks were conducted in multiple townships and villages throughout Kalamazoo County. Failures occurred after sales people asked for and received the under aged person's actual identification - which clearly showed the date of birth and the date the person was to turn 21 or 18years of age - and still sold alcohol or tobacco to the underage person. In other cases, no identification was requested by the salesperson at all. Along with each individual salesperson receiving a citation for selling alcohol or tobacco to minors, copies of each police report documenting each incident involving alcohol will be sent to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for consideration of possible violations against each businesses' liquor licenses.
