Life Insurance
The County provides at no cost to the employee a $20,000 group term life insurance policy.
Sick leave & Vacation
Up to 13 days sick leave are earned per year. A "sick bank" short-term disability program is also available. Unused sick leave accumulates to an unlimited amount. A long-term disability covering 60% of pay is provided. A Deputy earns 13 days vacation annually thru the first four years of service. A Deputy will then advance in stages up to 22 days after 20 years of service. In addition, three personal leave days are granted after a probationary period.
Longevity pay
Longevity pay is earned after five years of service, and raised each five year increment, reaching a maximum of 8.5% of an employee's annual gross pay after 25 years of service.
Pension
The County contributes 16% of wages toward a Deputy's pension.
Clothing
The Department furnishes all uniforms, outer wear, boots, duty leather and necessary equipment. Dry cleaning is provided at no cost to the employee.
Promotional Opportunities
Deputies are eligible to participate in the promotional process after three continuous years of service.
Qualifications
Applicants for the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office must meet all of the following minimum qualificatons:
- Citizen of the United States
- No felony or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions as an adult or juvenile
- Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license at the time of appointment
- 20/20 corrected vision and the absence of color blindness
- One of the below:
Bachelors Degree
Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification or certifiable
Michigan Corrections Officer Training Council (MCOTC) certification
A minimum of two years experience in corrections, law enforcement or military service and earned a minimum of 30 college credit hours.
Selection Process

If minimum requirements are met, pass a battery of written examinations.
A background check will be conducted on candidates successfully completing the written examinations.
A selection board will interview the top scoring candidates. Background investigations will be conducted on the finalists.
Accepted candidates are placed on a roster and will receive conditional offers of employment as openings arise.
Candidates who receive offers of employment must pass an evaluation of physical health and a drug screening, as well as the field training program.
