The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office was founded in 1830 when Delamore Duncan was named the first Sheriff for a newly organized territory called Kalamazoo County. Kalamazoo County was comprised of few farms, a lot of wooded land and two small towns called Schoolcraft and "Bronson", whose name was changed six years later to Kalamazoo. The population was a few hundred but a decade of growth saw its population quickly rise to seven thousand. In 2015 the population of Kalamazoo County is 251,000 and the county is dotted with many agricultural areas, two main Cities, Kalamazoo and Portage, and several smaller villages.
The Sheriff's Office is divided into three divisions: the Operations Division, the Jail Division, and the Support Division. The Office of Emergency Management is housed within the Sheriff's Office facility which the Sheriff oversees. Each Division is commanded by a Captain who is supported by two Lieutenants or Administrators. Each supervises the daily operations of the various sections within their Division. The Jail Division and the Operations Division are assigned several Sergeants who supervise front line operations and personnel.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for over 105,000 residents in the County and patrols over 500 square miles making it the largest service agency in the area. The Sheriff's Office operates the County Jail that has a daily population of over 400 inmates. In addition the Sheriff's Office provides Marine patrols on the county lakes and rivers, off road vehicle and snowmobile patrols on the county trails, as well as security for all of the Kalamazoo County Courts. The Sheriff's Office is a participant in the regional Critical Response Team and the area Southwest Drug Enforcement Team.
I am proud of everyone who work and volunteer at the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office and the fine work they all perform in helping to keep our community safe.
