Concealed Pistol License (CPL)
Effective January 1, 2021, due to COVID-19 the Kalamazoo County Clerk / Register of Deeds office is closed to the public upon further notice. Limited in-person services are available by appointment only; all other services can be completed online or by mail.
Concealed Pistol License (CPL) applications are available from the Kalamazoo County Clerk's Office. You must apply in person in the county that you reside in. Renewal applications may also be completed online through the Michigan State Police (MSP).
All Concealed Pistol Licenses will expire on the date of birth of the applicant. They are issued for a period of no more than 5 years and no less than 4 years, depending on the applicant's issue date and date of birth.

Complete a Pistol Safety Training Course (Must be taken w/in last 5 years)
Training certificate must contain:- The statement “This course complies with section 5j of 1927 PA 372”
- Printed name, signature, and telephone number of course instructor
- Individual has successfully completed the course
- Name of training organization that certified instructor (e.g., NRA, MCOLES, etc)
- Training organization telephone number
- Instructor’s certification number and expiration date

Complete the CPL application*
*REMEMBER: do not sign the application until the Clerk's Office staff administer an oath to you.
- Make an appointment to visit the Kalamazoo County Clerk’s office.
- Visit the Kalamazoo County Clerk’s office to finalize the application.
NOTE: you must bring the following materials to finalize your application:
- Pistol Safety Training Course Completion Certificate
- Completed CPL application (without signature)
- Valid government issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID- you MUST be a resident of Kalamazoo County)
- $100 cash/check/credit
- Make an appointment and visit the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s office for fingerprinting. For more information on fingerprinting please see Fingerprinting Information below. You will receive either your CPL or a Letter of Explanation in the mail within 45 days from the day you get your fingerprints done.

Complete the online renewal application with the Michigan State Police.
NOTE: Online renewal requires a personal identification number (PIN) which is included in the renewal notice. To acquire your renewal PIN please email cplinformation@kalcounty.com indicating that you need a CPL renewal letter mailed again and include your most recent mailing address.

Visit the Kalamazoo County Clerk’s office to finalize the application.
NOTE: you must bring the following materials to finalize your application:
- Completed CPL application
- Valid government issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID- you MUST be a resident of KalamazooCounty)
- Current CPL card
- $115 cash/check/credit
Reapplications
Reapplications for CPLs are designed for individuals who have had a Michigan CPL in the past and it has either:
- Been expired for more than 1 year
- Was revoked
All Reapplications must be done in person at the County Clerk’s office in which you permanently reside.

After submitting your application to the Clerk's Office, you will be provided a receipt that you will take, along with your government-issued identification, and CPL license (if renewing) to the Sheriff's Office to be fingerprinted.
Fingerprinting for Concealed Pistol Licenses (CPL) is offered by Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at 1500 Lamont Ave., Kalamazoo, Michigan, 49048. They are open by appointment only. Please use this link to make your appointment.
Fingerprinting triggers a Michigan State Police background check to determine your eligibility to be issued a CPL. You will receive either your CPL or a Letter of Explanation in the mail within 45 days from the day you get your fingerprints done.
To replace a lost or stolen CPL, make an appointment to come to our office with a valid government issued photo ID and request a duplicate license. There is a $10 fee that can be paid with cash/credit/check.
