Juvenile Home - Auxiliary Services
Clinical Services: A full time Psychologist provides emotional, behavioral and psychological assessments to assist in the behavior programming and treatment plans during a youth's stay in the Juvenile Home. In addition, the Psychologist provides training to staff in behavior management, intervention programming and a resource for Family Division casework staff in case plan development. The Psychologist also works collaboratively with Community Mental Health in planning for youth actively receiving services from that provider.
Medical Services: A full time nurse provides medical care to all youth including: physical examinations, medication issues and dealing with injuries and illness. Physicians visit the facility weekly to assist in the evaluation and medical care provided to the youth placed in the facility.
Activities Programming: All youth are provided with the recreational activities, group projects and educational programming throughout their stay at the Juvenile Home. Activities are planned for all non-school time to ensure that time is structured and productive.
Volunteers: Many people from the community volunteer time and resources to the facility to provide programming, activities and to mentor youth.
Interns: The Juvenile Home can be a great learning and training experience for students in the community at the local colleges and universities. The facility provides tours and internship opportunities throughout the year.
The Late Show: The Kalamazoo Lawyer's Auxiliary has developed and coordinates a bed-time story hour for all residents. Community volunteers pledge time to read a variety of inspiring books two nights a week. Our young people thoroughly enjoy this program as it provides a comforting bed-time routine. This program has proven to be a favorite of the youth at the Juvenile Home and has lead to a renewed interest for many of them in reading during their stay and after they leave the facility. In addition, the Late Show Program has provided reading material to our youth, available to them in the Audrey Gray Library located in the Youth Center School.
Spiritual: Non-Denominational chapel services are conducted Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. Attendance is voluntary.
Social Learning: During a youth's stay at the Juvenile Home we strive to provide social learning in many areas, including: Living Skills, Cultural Experiences, Recreational Activities, Mediation/Conflict Resolution Skills, Substance Abuse Assessment and Education and Job Skills.
