8th District Court

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the 8th District Court is joining efforts with our national, state and local governmental bodies to protect everyone in our community, including those who work in our courthouses, and the members of the public who enter our courthouses. Consistent with the directives and recommendations of the Governor, the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, and Kalamazoo County Government, our Court is implementing the following changes to our business operations effective immediately:

The 8th District Court is a court of limited jurisdiction serving the County of Kalamazoo. The 8th District Court has three Divisions located at two Locations within the City of Kalamazoo.

The Criminal Division is located at the Michigan Avenue Courthouse; felony preliminary exams are heard and misdemeanor charges with a maximum penalty of 1 year in jail are adjudicated. The Probation Department is located at the Michigan Avenue Courthouse.

The Civil Division is located at the Crosstown Courthouse; civil lawsuits are handled and civil marriages are performed.

The Traffic Division is located at the Crosstown Courthouse; traffic and non-traffic civil infractions are handled.

Hours of Court Operations: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm and offices are open through the lunch hour.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the 8th District Court is to create, as a foundation for a jurisdiction-wide unified trial court, a single district court, integrated both judicially and administratively, using shared resources that function in accordance with uniform procedures to provide citizens equal and timely access to the local justice system.
