Recovered is defined as the number of persons with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis who are alive 30 days post-onset (or referral date if onset is not available). The number of persons recovered on May 8, 2020 represents COVID-19 confirmed individuals with an onset date on or prior to April 8, 2020. If an individual dies from a COVID-related cause >30 days from onset/referral, they are removed from the number of persons recovered.

Note: These are laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19. Date is by onset (when symptoms start) of disease. If onset date is missing, referral date (when Public Health was notified) is used. Cases are likely to increase due to 2-14 day incubation period (time from exposure to virus until the first symptoms develop) and reporting delays. Case count per day is likely to change due to determination and use of onset date instead of referral date. For example, if a case is referred to Public Health on 4/27/20 and the public health investigation finds an onset date of 4/20/20, the case will be graphed by onset date rather than referral date in all future updates. All data is sourced from the Michigan Disease Surveillance System.

Limitations:  This map represents the number of laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 by self-reported, residential address within a Kalamazoo County zip code. Zip codes are outlined by arbitrary borders. Size and populations are not equal between them. Mapping by zip code is limited by the type of disease being mapped and over what time period. It is important to note that people are often exposed to COVID-19 outside of their home zip code, for example at work, school or a business in another zip code.

Multiple cases within congregate living settings, such as nursing homes, can lead to the appearance of more cases being distributed over a larger area when mapped by zip code residential address. For example, if a nursing home has several cases, the address of the nursing home will be counted several times. The range for a zip code will thus increase when all cases reside in the same location. Low case counts should also not be mistaken for a decreased risk of exposure to COVID-19. COVID-19 has reached community level transmission throughout Kalamazoo County and does not adhere to zip code borders.

Note: Case counts are combined into ranges to protect privacy and data reliability. Zip codes that represent post office boxes (such as 49003 and 49005) are not represented. Cases that have a missing address are not represented.
