This position performs the law enforcement functions of a Deputy Sheriff for Kalamazoo County.
Provide vehicular transport of inmates between Kalamazoo County Jail and the courthouse, and to or from other jurisdictions and prisons as necessary; provide ambulatory transport of inmates within the jail and between the courthouse holding area and the courtroom. Provide courtroom security; make courtroom arrests after sentencing. Operate courthouse security checkpoints. Arrest persons detained at the probation/parole office and courthouse security checkpoints. Prepare accurate and complete written reports and records, including investigation data entry and preparation of bond release papers. Conduct Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) searches and data entry or revisions. Testify in court on jail related investigations. Assist with jail security and inmate supervision. Perform all the duties of a Corrections Officer and a Sheriff’s Deputy-Corrections. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum of 30 college credit hours or equivalent military training and experience, with Michigan Corrections Officer Training Council (M.C.O.T.C.) certification and Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (M.C.O.L.E.S.) certified/certifiable.
Additionally, candidate must be a citizen of the United States, 21-years of age or older, and possess a valid Michigan driver’s license. Must pass a drug screen and physical/medical examination. Must have knowledge of law enforcement procedures and techniques. Must have effective written and verbal communication skills, composure during stressful situations, and basic computer skills including experience with word processing and database data entry. Must be physically able to wear and operate respiratory protection devices, and to learn and apply self-defense and other procedures for dealing with hostile or violent citizens. Upon hire, must become LEIN, First Aid, CPR, and AED certified. No visible tattoos or must be concealed during working hours. Must pass a thorough background investigation.
