This position works in a medical clinic in the County Jail, a 24 hour locked down facility, using standard medical equipment.
Assess inmates after preliminary examination to determine if emergency or regular medical/dental care is required. Collect specimens and perform routine lab procedures. Evaluate and treat medical concerns/conditions of inmates. Counsel inmates on medical treatments, hygiene, and proper health habits. Administer medications and care for illness/injuries according to physician orders. Monitor dispensing of medications and authorize or recommend transfer of inmates to medical appointments/hospitals. Provide emergency nursing care until arrival of physician or transfer to hospital facility. Thoroughly document and/or chart all pertinent medical information regarding medical treatments/evaluations. Consult with Food Service relative to special dietary needs and menu recommendations for inmates. Order and maintain medical and dental supplies. Use and order use of medical devices and equipment. Arrange psychiatric evaluations as requested or necessary. Conduct inmate physicals. Train and educate other RN’s.
Education: Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan is required. Must be First Aid, AED, and CPR certified.
Experience: Three years of experience in a county health department, hospital, or other health care organization working directly with medical providers, patients, and community organizations preferred. Effective written and verbal communication skills, basic keyboarding and computer skills including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and database entry/retrieval are required.
