KCSO Partnership with Momentum bears fruit
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office has entered in partnership with the Momentum program which is an affiliate of The Urban Alliance. Momentum is a radically different way of addressing Workforce Development in Urban Neighborhoods. With a unique blend of life skills, essential hands on skills, and employment readiness skills, Momentum gets to the root of what causes job loss and develops traits that employers require. Each Momentum graduate completes a rigorous 6-week course of training that includes 100 hours of in class instruction and 100 hours of volunteer work experience. In addition, graduates are placed into professions which pay a living wage from Momentums network of over 50 local employers.
In August, this partnership was made official when five inmates from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office began their workforce development training in the Momentum program. After six weeks, four of the five participants had completed all course requirements and successfully completed the program. On October 11th, three of the participants attended a career fair at the Urban Alliance Training Center.
Those participants from the jail that were successful in the completion of the program joined two other groups of participants Thursday night for a graduation ceremony. The Sheriff’s Office is encouraged by the growth and success of each of these participants and for future opportunities this partnership will produce.
Congratulations to each of the Momentum Graduates!
