Sheriff Fuller Issues Statement Following Investigation Into Death At Kalamazoo County Jail

The following is a statement from Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller following an investigation into a death at the Kalamazoo County Jail on Dec. 17, 2020.

“On Dec. 17, 2020 a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputy making her regular rounds discovered an unresponsive inmate in a cell in the medical/mental health wing of the Kalamazoo County Jail. The deputy immediately called for help and initiated life-saving measures to revive the individual. Deputies and medical staff continued those efforts until paramedics arrived. After all attempts to resuscitate the individual were exhausted, the doctor in charge pronounced the individual deceased. We have conducted a thorough investigation into this incident, and we have determined the individual died by suicide. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences to the individual’s family and friends.”
